What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

A neuropsychologist administers and interprets standardized measures to understand the relationship between the brain and behavior. The evaluation assesses an individual’s cognitive, academic, behavioral, and social-emotional functioning.

While the measures administered vary based upon the reason for the referral and are individually selected for each patient, the areas assessed typically include intellectual functioning, fine motor, attention, language abilities, visual spatial skills, memory and learning, and executive functioning. Dr. Stocker often includes personality testing and various self-report or parent-report measures.

Dr. Stocker approaches assessment from a strength based and patient-centered lens. Her goal is to help the patient, family, caregivers, or treatment team understand the patient’s unique strengths and vulnerabilities and to assist with effective treatment planning. Dr. Stocker is trauma-informed and neurodiversity affirming.

What is the process of a neuropsychological evaluation?

The assessment process is generally conducted across three scheduled appointments.

  • Clinical Interview: The evaluation process starts with a clinical interview where Dr. Stocker gathers information about the patient’s past and current functioning. This information is obtained from the patient, parents, or collateral sources as appropriate. She will also review any important records.
  • In-person Testing: This appointment ranges from 4-7 hours of standardized test administration and is individualized based on the referral questions. Once the evaluation is complete, Dr. Stocker will score the measures and write a report discussing the findings, diagnostic impressions, and individualized treatment recommendations.
  • Feedback: After the report is complete, Dr. Stocker will meet with the patient to discuss the findings, including diagnostic impressions, strengths and vulnerabilities, and personalized recommendations. This appointment usually occurs 2-3 weeks after the evaluation. The final report will then be shared with the referral source and the patient, unless otherwise discussed at the onset of services.
